Unsettled: Sugar as a Product of Pine

The USDA many decades back researched Pinus strobus for its ascorbic acid and carbohydrate content. They found that pine contains up to five percent carbohydrate content. Much more research could be done, but on pondering, I wonder if there is a simple enough way to remove the pine flavor and purify this into a syrup product not unlike maple syrup.

This, if possible, would be incredible for those seeking to survive in the woods as well. Currently, the only way to get carbohydrates from pines is to cut out the outer bark, and peel it off until reaching the inner bark (cambium), which is consumed. This likely has more negative effect on the tree than tapping does.

Just thoughts, not thought-out but still worth wondering. Maybe someone will research this someday.
