Poisonous pines

Updated: Dec 1, 2018

Are there poisonous pines? It seems so, yes. The Jeffrey pine (Pinus jeffreyi) contains a toxic substance. Ponderosa pine may cause abortion. Other pines, which may be dangerous in high amounts, include lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, and red pine.

There are no toxic pines growing naturally (as compared to naturalized, invasive, and planted) on the east coast of the United States.

Non-pine conifers, and evergreens in general, are a different thing altogether. Yew is highly toxic. Holly is toxic. Cypress is toxic. Juniper, though consumed fairly often, may be bad for those with kidney disorders.

Other pines, conifers, and evergreens may contain toxic substances. As with any plant found outside, you should ask a doctor before consumption or external application. Proper identification is very important.
