Pine needles, which once caused wildfires in the woodlands of India, are now being lit intentionally, for electric generation. The company employs over one hundred people, mostly women, in the supplemental job of harvesting pine needles.
In addition to the small income received, the villagers also save time, 70% of time to be exact. Because the pine needles produce charcoal as a by-product, the villagers do not have to search for fuel sources such as wood. Further, this stops the forest from being cut down, as needles decompose on the forest floor and are not alive when harvested.
This should also be considered reason to utilize the needles of pines after lumber and pulpwood harvest, in which the needles are sometimes disregarded.
